Stuff to Make Hair Grow Faster

The normal rate of hair growth averages approximately six inches per year. Many people, both men and women, seek to accelerate this rate of hair growth, along with gaining healthy, thick hair. The commercial market has taken advantage of this by offering an array of products that promise rapid hair growth or replacement of hair loss. However, the truth is that most products and treatments fail to live up to the hype. Does this Spark an idea?

Minoxidil

Minoxidil, marketed under the commercial name of Rogaine, among other brands, is one of two medical treatments (other than hair-transplant surgery) approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety and effectiveness for hair growth. Minoxidil can be taken internally or applied topically and is approved for both men and women. However, minoxidil will not miraculously restore a full head of hair on a totally bald scalp. Also, any hair that grows with minoxidil use will be lost if the drug treatment is stopped.

Propecia

Finasteride, largely marketed under the name Propecia, is the second treatment approved by the FDA for hair growth. It is a tablet that inhibits the active male hormone in the hair follicle, thereby blocking the process of male-pattern baldness. However, unlike minoxidil, finasteride is not approved for use by women. In fact, women of childbearing age are strongly cautioned against even handling the medication because of the risk of birth defects in unborn children.

Hair Growth: Vitamins and Supplements

While deficiencies in nutrients, especially B-complex vitamins and iron, can result in hair loss, no definitive evidence has been produced which proves that special "hair-growth" vitamins will cause rapid hair growth. At best, vitamin supplements will serve to fill the gaps in basic nutrition, which may inhibit hair growth in otherwise healthy people.

Nioxin

Nioxin brand products are marketed as a means to improve the appearance of thinning hair. Nioxin is formulated to work with the scalp, which is living tissue as well as providing cleaning action for the hair follicle, which is actually dead. As a result, Nioxin is reportedly more effective than conventional over-the-counter hair-growth treatments. There are some anecdotal reports that Nioxin also improves the rate of hair growth somewhat; however, there is no evidence that Nioxin will enable someone to grow waist-length hair.

Laser Treatments

The FDA recently approved an over-the-counter laser treatment that reportedly regrows hair. However, the approval was merely for the safety of the product, rather than a confirmation of its effectiveness. There is no definitive evidence that laser treatment is effective in regrowing hair or making hair grow faster. Nonetheless, laser-hair treatments have become increasingly popular, with centers across the United States.

Hair Replacements

The only means of achieving rapid increase in hair length is through adding hair, either through a weave or hair extensions, hairpieces and wigs. Hair weaves can give the appearance of naturally growing hair and can be maintained for months at a time. Hair extensions, hairpieces and wigs are more temporary hair-growth solutions---and can be applied and removed over the course of a single evening.
