Those pursuing a career as a physical therapy assistant (PTA) have chosen a growing field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there were 63,800 PTA positions in 2008; the projected number in 2018 is 85,000. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) lists 17 accredited PTA programs in Ohio, including some in and near Cleveland. Most schools offer student aid and offer credit for courses from other accredited schools. Some campuses offer courses online for working students.
Cuyahoga Community College
Many courses at Cuyahoga Community College are online, with on-campus laboratory sessions held at least once each week. Students must keep their grade point average at 2.0 or better. The five-semester program begins with a summer session and lasts 21 months, requiring 73 credits. The college also offers a part-time program that lasts an extra year. At the end of the first year, students spend five 40-hour weeks at clinical work and another 12 weeks during the second year. There are openings for 36 PTA students beginning September of each year. The college has student aid programs available. Graduates receive an associate of applied science degree. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), an average 62 percent of students successfully completed the program, of whom 95 percent successfully passed licensing exams. The employment rate among students who responded to APTA's survey was 99 percent.

Remington College-Cleveland West Campus
The first student class of this new program offered by Remington College will graduate in July 2011. The program lasts 24 months, during which students complete courses and clinical work. The program includes the required general education courses such as psychology, speech communication, English composition and biology. Students also complete classes in physical therapy, kinesiology, pathophysiology, and geriatrics. The Cleveland West campus at North Olmsted is about 17 miles from downtown Cleveland--about a 25-minute drive. Students can earn a physical therapist assistant associate degree. Cleveland West is the only Remington College campus with a PTA program. The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTA) has declared the program a candidate for accreditation. The commission's will review accomplishments of the first class during its last semester to finalize accreditation.

Lorain County Community College
Elyria is 26 miles from Cleveland. The PTA program offered by Lorain County Community College is a two-year course. Students must possess an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider certification to enter the program and maintain a "C" average. An orientation course may be required of some students. The only prerequisite courses are biology and algebra. Students earn 34 semester credits of general education and 39 credits of PTA courses. Clinical experience starts in the third semester. Work experience must include at least one acute care and one long-term care facility. The school has openings for 20 new students at the beginning of the school year in August. The college offers financial aid counseling. Students who complete the program earn an associate of applied science degree. According to the APTA, 80 percent of students who enter the program graduate. Students sometimes must take state or national licensing exams more than once but overall 95 percent received their licenses. The employment rate among students sampled by APTA was 100 percent.
