Most Harmful Foods for Diabetics

Diabetes is a seriuos health problem today. What you eat plays a particularly major role in the development of diabetes. Diabetics, and those who are prone to developing the disease, should avoid certain foods that can cause harm to them.

Sugary Foods

    Diabetes is a condition in which the body's ability to use blood sugar is compromised. That means that diabetics should cut down the amount of sugar they take in. Foods high in sugar, such as soda and other fizzy drinks, candies and sugary biscuits can be removed from the diet and probably not be missed.

Starchy Foods

    Related to sugary food are foods that are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are readily converted by the body into blood sugar, or glucose. The simple term to use for carbohydrates is starch. In diabetics, too much starchy food can result in excess sugar in the body, causing conditions to worsen. Foods such as white rice and bread made from refined flour should be eaten in very low quantities.

Fatty Foods

    It is known that excess fat in the body is responsible for the development of diabetes. That is why diabetics should not eat foods that contain saturated fats and animal fats. According to Diabetes.org, saturated fat should account for less than 7 percent of a diabetic's daily calories. Instead of foods high in saturated fats, diabetics should opt for foods like fish that contain polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids.

Alcohol

    Alcohol is quickly converted to blood sugar, which can be hard for diabetics to handle. In addition, alcohol can lead to high blood pressure. Diabetics should avoid alcohol if they want to avoid complications.

Processed Foods

    Diabetics should also avoid processed foods most of the time. These foods tend to be high in sodium, high in fat, and high in calories. Unless you read the labels carefully and make sure to choose healthy versions of processed foods, you should avoid them. Instead, choose fresh foods or foods you make yourself so you have more control over the ingredients.
