Fat Burning Foods for Women

Women's metabolisms can sometimes work slower than men's metabolisms. Women are more prone to gain weight in the hips, thigh and buttocks area. A woman's metabolism rate can also vary depending on genetics and lifestyle. However, the following fat burning foods can increase a woman's metabolism and allow her to lose weight at a faster rate.

Complex Carbohydrates

    Instead of reaching for a sugary doughnut (simple carbohydrate), women should turn to complex carbohydrates such as whole grain bread. Complex carbohydrates are packed with fiber, which increases fat burning and decreases cholesterol levels.

Lean Protein

    Lean protein is a good fat burning choice for women. Protein helps break down fat at a faster rate, and lean choices such as chicken and fish are healthier options compared to red meat (which is a high fat food).


    Citrus fruits such as grapefruit are packed with vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to speed up the metabolism and break down fat faster.

Low Glycemic Foods

    Low glycemic foods--such as carrot sticks with hummus--make good fat burners. Low glycemic foods don't raise blood sugar levels, which increase body fat and slow down metabolism.

Low-Fat Yogurt

    Low-fat yogurt is also a fat burning food due to its calcium content, as calcium helps burn fat at a faster rate.
