How to Grow Plants in the Classroom

Growing plants in the classroom is a good way to introduce children to the joys of science and nature. You will probably notice that your students can't wait to get to class each morning and see how the plants are growing, because children have a natural interest in living things, like plants and animals. This is why many classrooms have a pet, such as a tadpole, turtle or hamster.

Instructions

    1

Start with seeds. It's important for children to understand that plants grow from a tiny seed and the care they need for that to happen. To teach children what happens under the dirt when a seed begins to grow, wrap some seeds in wet paper towels and put them in a plastic bag. After the seeds begin germinating, you and your class can watch their progress.

    2

Place the seeds in some dirt after they have germinated. They will continue to grow and tiny plants will appear above the surface soon. You could even plant different types of seeds and let your students guess which plants came from which seeds.

    3

Grow some plants that are native to your area. Research the subject in the school library and decide as a class what type of plant you would like to grow. You might also be able to take the children on a field trip to try to find the same plant growing naturally in a park.

    4

Teach students about what plants need to stay alive. Explore how they're different from the needs of people. Ask the children what they think they could do to make the plants grow better. Try some of thesw ideas and see what works and what doesn't.

    5

Let your students pick some plants that you can eat, such as lettuce or tomatoes. Have a celebration when it's time to eat the food that they grew. On the other hand, you could grow flowers to present to family members on a special holiday.

    6

Ask school officials about the possibility of having a garden for which the entire school is responsible. Each class could take turns caring for the plants and learning about them. Depending on your location, you could have the garden outdoors or in a greenhouse.
