How to Motivate People to Lose Weight

Weight loss is most easily achieved through diet change and exercise. Both of those things are easier said than done if motivation is lacking.

Instructions

    1

Help them realize why they should lose weight. The people you are trying to motivate to lose weight must have a sense of why they are doing it on their own. Helping them find out why they are trying to lose weight will give you a better-focused person who will be more self-motivated. Whether their reason for losing weight is to become healthier or to fit in some old clothes, getting them to discover why will provide a motivational gold mine.

    2

Remind them of their goals. Motivation works like the sea tides in every person, rising and falling depending on the time. Even if the people you are trying to motivate realize their own reasons for wanting to lose weight, there will be times when you will have to kick-start their engines by reminding them. When muscles begin to ache from workouts or they want to quit because they can't eat what they want, remind them of their goals.

    3

Sweat the small stuff. Celebrating every small victory a person trying to lose weight makes will keep their energy level high. As the people you are motivating inch closer to dropping the pounds, recognizing their effort through compliments or positive reinforcement will help them to associate good things with their improvement.

    4

Clear a path. Showing someone how to do things is nearly always better than telling them. You will get better results from your own motivational efforts if you are doing many of the tasks you ask people to do with them. Helping them make diet plans they can follow, occasionally doing workouts together and having consistent events such as a weekly weigh-in will help to alleviate excuses they might make. People are also inspired by those who are willing to do what they ask of others.

    5

Paint pictures with a truthful brush. Although it is nice to have goals and tell those you are trying to motivate how things could be if they improve, sometimes this will not be enough if they do not face their own situation. Telling others the truth of their situation can be difficult, but it is often the best motivator life can provide. Saying that if someone doesn't lose weight they could be risking their life, for instance, can hit home and will more than likely motivate them beyond hurt feelings.
