Kindergarten Screening Tests for Teachers

A child's kindergarten readiness must be assessed by a teacher before he can be admitted to school. According to experts and childhood educators, there is no single or clear-cut factor that determines whether a child is ready for kindergarten. Instead, a child's development is evaluated on several fronts. Different states and schools have their own screening systems for teachers, but most of them check similar aspects of a child's development.

Visual and Adaptive Skills

    The kindergarten screening test should measure the visual skills of a child. A teacher may draw something and ask the child to copy it. Some children are capable of copying more or less what the teacher has drawn, while others will have some difficulty. Adaptive skills are also tested to determine the extent to which a child is able to understand and follow instructions.

Cognitive Skills

    Cognitive tests usually screen for the language skills of the child. The teacher is expected to test the ability of the child to construct simple sentences, to say the alphabet, recognize colors by name, and name shapes and places that are familiar to him. The construction of simple sentences is an especially important part of this test. It determines the child's capacity to communicate and understand speech.

Motor Skills

    Young children are generally active. Teachers test their motor skills to have a general idea of the child's physical state. This part of the test requires the child to skip, hop, run around, balance on his own and other such movements. Children who are able to undertake these tasks are considered fit enough to join kindergarten.

Final Tally

    Evaluation is the determinant of how well the child has fared. If carried out by an experienced teacher who understands the reasons for screening, the evaluation is quite comprehensive. Teachers are required to make notes and indicate scores on the different aspects of the test. Different institutions have their own pass mark depending on how the test has been formulated. If a child does not pass the exam the first time, the test can be rescheduled on a later date.
