Will Drinking Lots of Water Help Me Lose Weight?

Numerous dieting methods promise to help you lose weight. Although no single magic potion exists to reduce your waistline, there is a very helpful and cheap liquid available to almost everybody: water.

Water and Your Body

The human liver acts to metabolize stored fat and convert it to energy. However, the liver is also in charge of helping the kidneys when they are deprived of water. If your kidneys lack water, they will turn to the liver for help. When this happens, the liver ends up with two jobs, and is thus unable to burn fat efficiently.

Thirst and Hunger

Since the sensations for thirst and hunger are triggered together, your body can easily mistake one for the other. In other words, you might think you're hungry, when all you really need is water. A hydrated body will ask for food less often, thus reducing your caloric intake and weight.

Water Before Meals

Studies have shown that drinking just a glass of water before every meal can help you lose weight. A study by Brenda Davy, associate professor of human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech, revealed that people who drank a glass of water before meals ate 75 calories less that those who didn't.

Water Intoxication

There is such a thing as drinking too much water. Hyponatremia is the metabolic condition in which the body presents abnormally low sodium levels due to the excessive consumption of water and prolonged sweating. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, muscle cramping and stomach bloating. Severe cases can lead to seizures, coma, and even death. Although rare, hyponatremia can be prevented by limiting consumption of water to a reasonable amount and drinking fluids that contain electrolytes.
