What Would Cause Sudden High Blood Sugar?

A sudden spike in blood sugar levels is typically caused by eating certain foods or drinks with a high glycemic index. There is also the potential for immediate high blood sugar with medications or a high-stress event.

High-carbohydrate foods

High-carbohydrate foods can raise blood sugar quickly. Diabetics have to be really careful when eating this type of food, unless their blood sugar is low and they need food to quickly cause it to rise. Some of these types of foods include white bread, wheat bread, white rice and brown rice.

Breakfast fFoods

Cornflakes, biscuits, croissants, doughnuts and instant oatmeal have a high glycemic index that will quickly raise the blood sugar in the body. High-sugar foods need to be balanced with high-protein foods like meat.

Vegetables

Starchy vegetables can also raise blood sugar very quickly. These types of vegetables include boiled potatoes, instant potatoes, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

Snacks

Popcorn, soft drinks, rice crackers and chips can cause blood sugar to rise quickly. Even diet soda can cause your blood sugar to get uncontrollably high.

IV Fluids

If a person becomes dehydrated and is taken to the emergency room for IV fluids, tell the medical staff that the patient is a diabetic. If the medical staff does not know, the patient may be given an IV solution that has glucose in it, which can raise her blood sugar levels.
