What Type of Food Helps the Brain Think?

Fruits, cereals and grains, vegetables, legumes, fish and dairy products help the brain think best. Avoid foods with higher glycemic index (G.I.) which ranks foods according to the rate at which they are likely to increase blood sugar levels.

Balance

Maintain a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Too much carbohydrates and fats slow the brain down.

Proteins

Eggs, milk, meat and fish are good sources of brain friendly protein.

Salads

Vegetables such as cabbage, turnip, broccoli and cauliflower combined with beans, chickpeas and other legumes make excellent salads and can aid in brain function. Carrots and potatoes have higher G.I.

Fruits

Fruits with both pulp and juice take longer to be absorbed and therefore have lower G.I. levels than strained fruit juices. Therefore eat the whole orange and enjoy an apple instead of apple juice. Eat berries, grapefruit, apples, cherries, oranges, and grapes as these are nutritious, yet have low G.I.

Essential Minerals

Dark green vegetables contain iron needed to carry oxygen to the brain cells. Sodium, potassium and calcium are contained in most nuts, seeds and vegetables and are essential to the thinking process.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid processed foods and foods with high G.I. such as white bread, sugar, soda drinks, sugar coated cereal and soft bananas. Take less fried foods, margarine and baked products.
