What Is the Highest Fiber Cereal?

Past studies have shown that Americans aren't consuming enough fiber. In fact, most Americans are consuming half of the amount that they should be. A great way to add fiber to your diet is through breakfast cereals.

How Much Fiber?

According to a 1987 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition entitled "Dietary fiber intake in the US Population," adults are supposed to be consuming 25 to 35 grams of fiber everyday but are only consuming around 11 grams.

Bran Buds

Kellogg's Bran Buds contain the highest amount of fiber of all common breakfast cereals. It contains 36 grams of fiber per cup but also has a higher sodium content than other high fiber cereals with 599.5 milligrams per cup.

All-Bran with Extra Fiber

Kellogg's All-Bran with Extra Fiber has the second highest amount of fiber per serving. At 31 grams per cup, All-Bran with Extra Fiber has less than half the amount of sodium as Bran Buds, over three times the amount of calcium, less carbohydrates and less calories.

Fiber One

Fiber One cereals from General Mills are also at the top of the list for fiber content. The Original cereal contains 28.5 grams per cup while its other varieties range from 18 to 26 grams per cup.

All-Bran

Even without the extra fiber, All-Bran still has one of the highest amounts of fiber on the shelves. It contains 19.5 grams of fiber per cup but also has 551 milligrams of sodium--double the amount of All-Bran with Extra Fiber.
