What Foods Do Not Contain Carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates, which are sugars and starches, are often avoided when dieting. If you are interested in a no- or low-carbohydrate diet, there are many foods that contain no carbohydrates.

Water

Water has no carbohydrates and no calories. It is also good for your digestive system, and drinking a minimum of eight glasses every day will keep your body hydrated.

Meat and Fish

Most meats, except for those that have been commercially processed, have no carbohydrates. Many fish, such as including trout, salmon, flounder, cod, orange roughy, scallops, catfish, tuna and sardines, are free of carbohydrate.

Cheese

Some cheeses contain no carbohydrates, such as cheddar, Camembert, Muenster, Parmesan, and processed American cheese.

Vegetables

Many vegetables are high in carbohydrates, but a few have few or no carbohydrates, such as lettuce, spinach, radishes and mushrooms.

Other No Carbohydrate Foods

Other foods that contain no carbohydrates are butter, margarine, oils, coffee and tea, mayonnaise, mustard, diet sodas, some whipped creams and some alcohol such as gin, vodka, rum and whiskey.

Warnings

You should not begin a no-carbohydrate or low-carbohydrate diet without your doctor's advice. Lack of carbohydrates can cause fatigue, cramps and inhibited cognitive function. Following a study at Tufts University in Massachusetts that restricted carbohydrates from the participants, results indicated that the study showed an adverse effect on memory and cognitive impairment.
