Toronto Alternative Schools

Toronto Alternative Schools

The Toronto District School Board oversees alternative schools ranging from kindergarten to high school. In the 2009-2010 school year, the school board listed 41 registered alternative schools out of the 600 schools in the district. Parents concerned about their children not receiving sufficient attention from public schools sometimes look to alternative schools. Torontos alternative elementary and secondary schools feature small class sizes along with specialty courses unavailable through public institutions.

ALPHA Alternative School

ALPHA Alternative School instructs students through sixth grade in its elementary and secondary sections. This alternative school reduces stress on students by keeping work within class periods rather than assigning homework. Students lead discussions about classes, community service and other issues as part of all-school meetings held three days a week. The school also rotates enrollees through a five-seat Calling Committee that resolves disputes between students. Parents with special skills work with teachers and interns to provide a variety of classes each quarter. Families in Toronto need to apply early each year to enter ALPHAs lottery admissions system.

City School

The City School requires 11th and 12th grade students to complete a minimum of three courses per semester. Attendees choose from electives like calculus, Canadian law and drama to combine with math and science classes. The school encourages students to use the first names of their teachers to create informal relationships. The City School resides in the same building as the Waterfront School, which allows for student access to a full-sized gym and cafeteria. Students and teachers leave the City School each semester for trips to local attractions like the Toronto Islands.
