The Average Salary of a Behavior Analyst in Florida

The Average Salary of a Behavior Analyst in Florida

Behavior analysts conduct research in the science of behavior and the factors involved in changing behavior. They also provide applied behavior analysis services in which they make behavior evaluations, develop individualized plans for shaping and improving behavior, provide training for parents and caregivers, and monitor each case for progress and any need for modifications. Salaries for behavior analysts in Florida have a very wide range.

Types of Clients

Behavior analysts work with a wide range of clients, as noted by the Association for Behavior Analysis International, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and job listings at the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis, or FABA, website. Behavior analysts apply their science to alcohol and drug addiction, tobacco addiction, diet and exercise behavior, toilet training, juvenile delinquency, autism and other developmental disabilities and problems in the workplace.

Requirements

Job listings at the FABA website and at the job search website Indeed.com indicate that employers of behavior analysts generally require a master's degree, although some accept candidates with a bachelor's degree. Some employers prefer a Ph.D. Assistant behavior analysts are expected to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Suitable fields of study include behavior analysis or psychology with an emphasis in behavior analysis. Some employers look for candidates who have experience working with people with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders. Behavior analysts typically must hold professional certification from the national Behavior Analyst Certification Board, although some employers accept candidates with state certification.

Salary Range

The FABA lists numerous job openings for board-certified behavior analysts in February 2011. Posted pay rates have a very wide range, from $35 to $70 per hour, translating to $72,800 to $145,600 per year. The FABA also lists several job openings for board-certified assistant behavior analysts. Posted pay rates, again, have a wide range, from about $13.50 to $34 per hour, or $28,000 to $71,000 per year.

Benefits

While some behavioral analysts are self-employed and work as consultants, those working for an organization or academic institution receive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, along with paid time off and a 401(k) savings plan or a pension plan. Some places of employment provide a health care reimbursement account, continuing education assistance and an employee assistance program. Job listings indicate that assistant behavior analysts receive similar benefits.
