Side Effects of B12 Complex

Vitamin B12 is a special vitamin in the sense that the liver can store the vitamin for years, when most water-soluble vitamins leave the body as soon as they're used. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in blood formation and the proper function of the nervous system and brain.

Allergies

An allergic reaction to vitamin B12 is highly unlikely. However, people who are allergic to cobalt or cobalamin should not take this vitamin.

Side Effects

The side effects of vitamin B12 are extremely rare. If symptoms do occur, they usually include mild diarrhea, anxiety attacks, panic attacks, insomnia, heart palpitations, breathing problems, chest pain, hives, skin rash or itchy, swollen skin.

Recommended Dosage

The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine recommends that males and females over the age of 14 take 2.4mcg of vitamin B12 each day. Dosage amounts vary, so consult with your physician before beginning the supplement.

Overdose

It is nearly impossible to overdose on Vitamin B12, because it exits the body quickly through urination. However, the inactive ingredients in the vitamin may pose a threat. Seek medical care in the event of a substantial overdose.

Interaction with Herbal Supplements

Large doses of folic acid can cause problems in people with a vitamin B12 deficiency. It masks the symptoms of the deficiency, which can cause neurological damage if not treated promptly. Potassium may partially prohibit the absorption of vitamin B12, and in extreme cases can cause a vitamin B12 deficiency.
