Low-Carb Food for Diabetes

By eating several small, low-carb meals a day, diabetics can more easily maintain a stable blood-sugar level, while promoting long-term health.

Vegetables

The best choice of vegetables for diabetics are those with deep colors and dark green leaves. Spinach, asparagus and avocados have little affect on blood sugar, but the protein and fiber contained in these vegetables offers appetite satisfaction

Fruits

In a diabetic diet, fruits should be eaten sparingly, but when selecting fruit choose options that are dark in color. Strawberries and blueberries have a lower impact on blood sugar than starchier fruits such as apples and pears, which should be enjoyed in moderation.

Snacks

Cheese, nuts and jerky are good snack options because they are rich in protein and easy to transport.

Grains

Whole-grain options are best for a diabetic diet. Lightly salted popcorn and 100 percent whole-grain bread can be eaten in moderation with little impact on blood sugar.

Drinks

While decaffeinated coffee has almost no impact on blood sugar, regular coffee and other caffeinated beverages should be avoided because caffeine impedes the bodies ability to regulate blood sugar. Alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation, but always with food.
