Items Containing Latex in the Classroom

Latex, a material that comes from the milky sap of a rubber tree, can cause allergic reactions in children, especially ones who have a history of multiple hospitalizations. Reactions to latex can range from a rash to anaphylactic shock. Latex can be found in many items throughout a classroom. It is important for students with latex allergies and their teachers to know where latex can be found, recognize the risks and know how to respond to an allergic reaction.

Food

Certain foods may contain traces of latex. These foods include cherries, kiwi, passion fruit, papaya, bananas, figs, avocado, peaches, nectarines, tomatoes, plums, chestnuts, water chestnuts and celery. It is best to keep these foods out of the classroom completely.

Clothing

Keep a child with a latex allergy away from certain clothing materials. Types of clothing that may contain latex include rubber-soled shoes, athletic shoes, slippers, the adhesive in many shoes and elastic found in clothing such as a waistband. A student with a latex allergy should avoid wearing these materials if they cause a reaction.

Toys

Latex can be found in many toys that may be found in an early childhood or elementary school classroom. Toy materials to watch out for include rubber grips, rubber wheels on toys, Koosh balls, balloons, rubber balls, some dolls and the sealant on cars. It may be necessary to send a note home to all parents and guardians advising them to keep balloons away from the classroom in order to prevent any type of allergic reaction.

Art and Office Supplies

Many of the typical school supplies found in a classroom may contain latex. Supplies to avoid include adhesives, rubber cement, stickers, scissor grips, paint, rubber bands, rubber stamps, electrical cords, mouse pads and remote controls or calculator buttons made of rubber. Many of these items are essentials for students and teachers to use. Find latex-free options, or keep your students with latex allergies away from these items.
