How to Treat Jaundice With Sunlight

How to Treat Jaundice With Sunlight

Jaundice is a common problem among babies, especially if they are born premature or have a different blood type from their mothers. Jaundice in infants is evidenced in yellowish skin or eye color. It is usually not serious and some sunlight treatment should be sufficient to treat the problem. Here are some steps you can take to treat jaundice with sunlight.

Instructions

    1

Pick a time of the day to expose the baby to some indirect sunlight, preferably in the early morning or late evening. Be aware of the intensity of the sunlight, and do not put him under direct sunlight as this can cause sunburn on his highly sensitive skin.

    2

Undress the baby down to her diapers. Check her body temperature or feel her body to be sure she is not too cold from being without clothes.

    3

Pick a room that has sufficient sunlight shining in. Keep the baby in the room with supervision for about 30 minutes, and check again to ensure that the baby is comfortable. If he does well and does not appear to be too cold or too warm, let him stay for an additional 30 minutes.

    4

Repeat the treatment a few times a day for about an hour during each exposure. The condition should get better within a week and the bilirubin level, which is the indicator for jaundice, should drop with each day's treatment.

    5

Continue with the sunlight treatment, taking all the precautions to make sure that the baby does not get sunburned. Keep this treatment going until the skin tone is no longer yellowish and the eyes are clear.

    6

Seek professional help if condition does not improve or worsens.
