How to Take a Spare Tire Off an '83 GMC S15

The full sized spare tire located underneath the bed of a 1983 GMC S-15 is designed to be easy to remove if you ever get a flat tire. The truck comes from the factory with a spare tire tool kit that includes everything that you need to remove the tire from its mount on the frame. Doing so should take about 10 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Open up the spare tire tool kit located behind the front seat. Take out the multiple straight bars in the kit and lay them out by the rear bumper.

    2

Click together the straight bars in the kit so that the flattened end is on one side and the tire iron is on the other, making it look like a large letter "T."

    3

Insert the flattened end of the tubing into the hole in the middle of the rear bumper. Twist the bars until you feel them click into place, and then turn the tire iron counterclockwise to lower the spare tire to the ground.

    4

Lift the side of the tire with your hands. Tilt the spare tire holder onto its side and pull it up through the middle of the spare tire until the tire is free from the chassis. Slide the spare tire out from underneath the S-15.
