Determine the height for the clothes rod. Consider the length of clothes, need for space beneath hanging clothes and other factors. Use this as a basis for determining how much the bar should be raised.
Measure above the rod to determine the new location. Use a pencil to mark the point at which the bar will be located. Repeat the procedure for the opposite end. Make sure the same distance is measured on both ends.
Remove the clothes from the bar. Loosen any retaining screws used to attach the bar to the support brackets with a screw driver. Remove the bar from the brackets.
Remove screws from the support brackets with a screw driver. Depending on the type of support bracket, it may be necessary to remove one or several screws. Place the screws in a container so they may be used when reinstalling the brackets.
Position the brackets at the new higher mounting points. Drill pilot holes and install wall anchors if used. Insert anchors by tapping in place with a hammer. Mount the brackets using the screws removed earlier. Make sure the brackets are securely attached in the new position.
Place the clothes bar into the brackets. Use screws to secure the bar to the bracket if necessary and hang the clothes back on the rack.
