How to Prepare a Meal for a Diabetic

How to Prepare a Meal for a Diabetic

Preparing a meal for a diabetic is important. A person with diabetes needs to focus on eating well balanced dinners that are high in protein and vegetables, however low in carbohydrates. Foods high in carbohydrates and those that contain sugar are not healthy for diabetics who are trying to control their glucose levels. Healthy meals for diabetics also include cooking meals that are low in fat and sodium to help prevent a rise in blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Instructions

    1

Keep the pantry and refrigerator stocked with foods rich in flavor such as fruits, nuts, meats, vegetables, pickles and olives to ensure a fast and easy meal preparation. It's easy to grab something on the go, but most times foods on the go are high in sugar and carbohydrates, which is not good for diabetics.

    2

Determine what meal you are going to prepare. It should be a well balanced meal with a protein such as pork and chicken or a lean red meat. Add lots of vegetables like beans and broccoli. Try to offer only small portions of a carbohydrate.

    3

Use whole grain or wheat when cooking pasta and rice. Include only a small amount of reduced calorie butter if needed when cooking the above. Sea salt can be substituted for regular iodine salt. Other spices may be used such as fresh basil or garlic powder to give extra flavor.

    4

Prepare foods by grilling or cooking underneath a broiler. Opt out of preparing meals that are breaded or coated with sauces and creams. Fried foods contain breading, which is a carbohydrate that turns into sugar, and should not be prepared for a diabetic.

    5

Make large salads with lots of leafy vegetables, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. If you desire croutons, use sunflower seeds instead to give that extra crunch. Dribble a spoonful of olive oil mixed with cider vinegar as a dressing.

    6

Forget the sugary desserts that can raise those glucose levels. Instead of cakes, ice creams and pastries, make sugar free Jell-O or pudding and top with a light whipping cream or sugar-free Cool Whip.
