How to Feed Coturnix Quail

The Coturnix quail, also known as the Japanese quail, is a migratory species of bird. These birds were imported into the United States from Japan and are widely used for their meat and egg production. Although they are easy to take care of, they should be given feedings that are nutritious and healthy for proper growth. With the right nutrition, they can mature quickly. Without proper nutrition starting from the young stages, Coturnix quails can encounter growth retardation.

Feed Coturnix quail according to their growth stage. Birds that are younger than 3 weeks old should be fed turkey or game bird starter mash. Pour at least 2 oz. of feed in the feeder. Recommended feed can be purchased at your local feed stores.

Supply Coturnix quails that are between 3 to 6 weeks with chicken starter mash or crumbles. Fill the feeder half full, as this will prevent the feed from being spilled.

Feed Coturnix quails that are being raised for their eggs a special diet. Laying hens should be fed a supply of calcium such as lime stone or oyster shell. This will help the formation of the egg shell. They should also be fed chicken laying mash or crumbles.

Supplement feeds with seeds, grass clippings, lettuce and cracked grains. Chop or shred vegetables fine before feeding it to your Coturnix quail.

Provide Coturnix quail with fresh water alongside their feedings. Water is an essential part of their diet. The water containers should be cleaned and refilled each day.
