How to Create a Personal Diabetic Menu Online

Diabetes can be a serious medical condition if it is not properly monitored. In addition to regularly exercising and checking one's blood sugar, a diabetic person should also eat a healthy menu tailored specifically to meet the needs of a diabetic individual. Though this can be time consuming and confusing, programs are available online to aid in planning a diabetic menu. It is now possible to create a personalized, healthy and delicious diabetic menu online.

How to Create a Personal Diabetic Menu Online

    1

Make a list of meals you enjoy. At this stage, do not be concerned with the nutritional value of the meals. This is an important step because a person is unlikely to stick to a menu that is not tasty and appealing.

    2

Learn about the nutritional needs of a diabetic person. A low-sugar diet is typically what is recommended for a person with diabetes. The sugar intake should be equally spread throughout the day to ensure blood sugar levels remain stable. Additionally, the glycemic index (GI) should be used to determine which foods have glucose that breaks down rapidly versus which foods have glucose that breaks down slowly. The lower the GI score, the slower the glucose breaks down.

    3

Make changes to the meals you originally listed to make them more diabetic-friendly after learning about the nutritional needs of a diabetic person. For example, if you wanted to have a slice of white toast with jam for breakfast, that could be changed to a slice of whole wheat toast with sugar free jam to be a more suitable meal for a diabetic person. Consult a Registered Dietitian (RD) if you find yourself struggling with creating suitable meals.

    4

List the meals in an online menu planner, such as My Pyramid or Changing Life with Diabetes (see Resources). My Pyramid will allow you to plan your meals and view their nutritional information. Changing Life with Diabetes will allow you to plan your meals and provide suggestions to meet the needs of a diabetic person.
