How to Create a List of Foods for a Diabetic to Eat

Creating a list of foods for a diabetic to eat will make your grocery shopping much simpler, and also help you to stay away from problematic foods. Armed with a list like this, you'll be able to navigate the supermarket with unprecedented ease and better manage your diabetic diet.

    Go to the shopping market with a blank notebook and pen. You'll use these to write down foods that fit with your diabetic diet and also interest you as you carefully walk the entire store.

    Look for foods that are as raw and unprocessed as possible. Cooking foods can reduce their nutritional content, and processed foods contain all sorts of refined starches that can raise your blood sugar quickly.

    Stick to whole grains instead of refined carbohydrates. Whole grains take longer to digest and produce less of a rise in insulin levels than simple carbohydrates. Avoid things like white bread, white rice, and any type of pastry or confection.

    Try and stay away from all types of sugar except in fruit and very small amounts in things like yogurt. You still need to be careful because some yogurt can contain loads of sugar and some fruits are also naturally high in sugar, so you'll need to look into each food item carefully. While you may need sugar sometimes if your blood sugar gets too low, as a general rule diabetics avoid most sugar.

    Skip any sugar containing soft drinks. This includes energy drinks and any type of pop or soda. Water is one of the best things that a diabetic can drink, and by drinking more water you'll be more likely to stay properly hydrated.

    Read the labels on everything that you are interested in. Sometimes certain foods can be deceptive in terms of their sugar or nutritional content. Try to make reading labels a habit so that it becomes second nature.

    Open a word processing document on your computer to finalize the list once you get home. Transfer the foods from your notebook to the document and categorize them how you see fit. At this point you can print out as many copies as you need, and save the document for use in the future.
