How to Care for a New Dental Partial

How to Care for a New Dental Partial

Dentists often recommend a dental partial, or partial dentures, if you are missing teeth. Missing teeth have more downsides than you might think. According to Quality Dentistry, large gaps can cause the remaining teeth to move, resulting in damage to mouth tissues. Also, crooked teeth are more difficult to clean than straight teeth are, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Partial dentures fill out your smile, support your lips and cheeks and improve your speech. Caring for partials is slightly different from regular tooth care. Proper cleaning and storage are key to keeping your partials looking and feeling good.

Instructions

Cleaning

    1

Remove the partial and rinse off any food particles with plain water.

    2

Wet the denture brush and apply the denture cleaner.

    3

Gently brush the dentures with the brush to remove any stuck-on food particles, and thoroughly clean the appliance. Repeat this process at least twice a day or whenever it is necessary.

    4

Fill a cup with a denture-soaking solution and place your partial in the solution overnight. A partial left out will dry out and lose its shape.

Other Care

    5

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Proper nutrition is one key to healthy teeth.

    6

Let your dentist know immediately if your partial denture is cracked, missing a tooth or chipped.

    7

Bring your partial denture in for the dentist to adjust if it becomes uncomfortable. Loose or tight partials can cause sores and irritation.
