Foods That Raise Blood Sugar Levels

Foods with high glycemic index will raise the blood sugar. The glycemic index measures the effect of carbohydrates on the blood sugar. All fruits, vegetables, legumes, pasta and rice are carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are divided into sugar, starch and fiber. Sugar and starch will raise the blood sugar, but fiber does not.

Fruits that Raise the Blood Sugar

    Bananas, watermelon, pineapple, apricots and mangoes are some fruits that raise the blood sugar. These are not be eliminated as they possess many vitamins, but should be eaten in small quantities.

Vegetables that Raise the Blood Sugar

    Potatoes, corn, carrots, squash and peas are a few vegetables that are high in carbohydrates and will raise the blood sugar. All vegetables are essential for good health, but these can be eaten in small quantities.

Breads

    Breads made from white flour will raise the blood sugar. Breads made with whole grains will help stabilize the blood sugar.

    Both pasta and rice have a high glycemic index and will raise the blood sugar quickly.

Large Meals Raise the Blood Sugar

    Eating very large meals raises the blood sugar very quickly, as opposed to eating several small meals during the day.

Sugar and Honey

    Both sugar and honey raise the blood sugar, even though honey is a very healthy food.
