Causes of High Blood Sugar

Diabetes is one of the main causes of high blood sugar when the insulin levels of the patient are not regulated through proper diet or medication. Diabetics learn to recognize the onset of rising sugar levels. Symptoms of high blood sugar include increased thirst and urination, blurred vision and fruity-smelling breath. In addition to a diagnosis of diabetes, there are a number of other causes of high blood sugar.

Diet

Eating or drinking foods and beverages that contain a large amount of carbohydrates can increase blood sugar levels temporarily.

Exercise

When the body becomes accustomed to certain levels of exercise and activity, it may react with rising blood sugar levels when that activity is interrupted or missed for a number of days in a row.

Stress

Stress affects many body functions, including blood sugar levels. "Good stress," such as going on a trip, is as detrimental to blood sugar levels as negative stress, such as a death in the family.

Illness

Physical trauma can send blood sugar levels soaring. Anything from surgery to a prolonged fever or accidental injury can affect blood sugar levels.

Treatments

Certain medications affect the body through elevated blood sugar reactions. Treatments such as physical therapy and other bodywork may cause blood sugar levels to spike.

Change

The body reacts to all physical changes, often by triggering a spike in blood sugar to prepare the body for a fight or flight response. Initial spikes usually subside, but pay attention to lingering side affects.
