Aquarium Keyboard Games

Aquarium Keyboard Games

In aquarium keyboard games, the player meets game objectives by quickly typing words as they appear on the screen. The aquarium setting provides a rationale for the words to ebb and flow in a challenging way. Gamequarium tests can improve your typing skills, but they don't teach correct keyboarding techniques. All the games discussed on this page are free online browser games. Links are in the references at the bottom of the page.

"Bubbles Typing Game"

Bubbles float up from the bottom of the aquarium and you must pop them before they surface or lose the point. You pop a bubble by typing the letter or number inside. The game keeps score and tells you how many bubbles you popped out of how many bubbles there were. The game is flawed in that there is no scroll bar and if you use the arrow keys to show more of the game screen on your computer screen, the game does not work. You can disable the special effects heard as bubbles are popped if the game moves too slowly on your computer.

Level: Beginner. Uses only single letters and numbers.

"Baracuda"

Words pollute Baracuda's river habitat. The computer creature, spelled with one less 'R' than the fish of the same name, needs your help to get rid of these pollutants. As you type the words that appear on the screen, "Baracuda" kills them. You can set the speed that words come into the river to slow, faster or fastest. Be careful; if you don't keep up with the words the river will foul and "Baracuda" will die. The river gets bluer if you and "Baracuda" stay on top of the pollutant invasion, and redder if you fall behind. If your "Baracuda" is too slow on its own and cannot keep up with the words, you can click on a link for a scaled down version of the game that is easier on your computer's resources.

Level: Intermediate. Uses words up to eight letters long.

"The Frogs Are Off Their Diet"

This aquarium keyboard game gives you six frogs to keep alive. You have to type the clusters of letters and punctuation marks before the frogs eat them. If a frog eats a cluster, he dies. The game highlights the letters as you type them so that you know which cluster you are eliminating. If you type too slowly and there is a cluster that begins with the character you just typed, then the game moves on to that cluster and abandons the cluster you almost eliminated. The game keeps score and gives you the option of posting your score on a board to compare with other players.

Level: Advanced. Uses groups of letters that often are not words. Uses punctuation.
