Why Would a Dog Lose Weight?

Weight loss in dogs can be quite alarming for pet owners. If your dog appears to have lost weight, there are a variety of reasons, some of which may require that you contact your veterinarian.

Parasites

Parasites are one of the most common reasons for a dog to lose weight. Some parasites that cause weight loss include heartworms, hookworms, roundworms and sarcoptic mange.

Diseases

There are a variety of diseases in which dogs are prone to losing weight. Some of these include heart disease, various types of cancer, stomach conditions and gastrointestinal diseases.

Medication

Another reason for weight loss may be due to new medications or treatments your dog is receiving. For example, a dog undergoing chemotherapy is a likely candidate for weight loss.

Lack of Appetite

Weight loss can occur when your dog exhibits a lack of appetite. If this occurs, it's important to contact your veterinarian to find the cause of appetite loss, as it can be due to some very serious illnesses or diseases.

Increase in Activity

Your dog may have lost weight due to an increase of activity. For example, in the spring, many owners begin walking their dogs again on a regular basis, and this can cause significant weight loss, especially if there was little activity during cold winter months.

Obesity

In some situations, weight loss may be necessary for the health of your dog. This can be done through diet and exercise and should be done with the help of your veterinarian.
