What Is Xylitol Found In?

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that is used in many items you encounter every day. You may especially find xylitol a part of your daily diet if you are diabetic or are cutting down on your sugar consumption.

Chewing Gum

Sugar-free chewing gum often contains xylitol because it doesn't interfere with the elasticity of chewing gum and does not promote tooth decay.

Candy

Xylitol is used in sugar-free candy, which is often marketed to diabetics since xylitol does not affect insulin levels.

Medicine

Throat lozenges, liquid medicines and chewable vitamin or medicine tablets often use xylitol because it adds sweetness and masks the bitter tastes of other ingredients.

Dental Hygiene Items

Toothpastes and mouthwashes often contain xylitol to add flavor because it does not promote tooth decay.

Warning

While xylitol is safe for human consumption, it is toxic to dogs. Never give your dog any foods or medicines that contain xylitol, and consult your veterinarian immediately if your dog accidentally ate something containing xylitol.
