Vitamins for Dogs With Cancer

Vitamins for Dogs With Cancer

Like humans, dogs are prone to cancer as well. This cancer can come in a number of forms, including of the blood, brain and numerous other parts of the body. Fortunately, there are plenty of vitamins available--most of which are available by prescription only through a veterinarian--designed to treat and fight cancer in dogs.

Vitamins That Aid in Health

On the whole, n-3 (or omega-3) fatty acids and antioxidants benefit the immune system, which can help defend a dog's body against cancer. However, overdosing on antioxidants and vitamins can prove to be harmful, so it's best to consult with a veterinarian to determine the right amount of antioxidants and vitamins for a specific animal. Plus, studies have shown that certain antioxidants and vitamins can prove harmful if given three days before or after chemotherapy treatments. While approximate, here is a per-pound, per-dog breakdown of recommended vitamin allotments for dogs with cancer:

    Vitamin A -- 625 imperial units (IU).
    Vitamin C -- 25 milligrams.
    Vitamin E -- 10 IU.
    Selenium -- 2 micrograms.

Consult professionals at a pet store of choice for more information on which vitamins are widely available, as well as which vitamins are already available in select dog foods, treats and supplements.

Echinacea

An immune system booster, echinacea is available in capsules, tablet and dried root form. Widely used in Europe, echinacea is used mostly in Europe, but is also used in the United States. Follow the instructions as directed on the bottle for optimal use. Echinacea is available without a prescription.

Cat's Claw

Cat's claw, a plant that grows wild in the Amazon rainforest, comes in many forms, including liquid extracts, capsules and teas. It has anti-tumor properties, and there is also evidence to support that it "leads to remission of brain and other tumors." This is used predominately for tumors of the central nervous system in dogs.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle helps guard the liver from further damage during chemotherapy treatments for cancer in dogs. Natural Dog Health Remedies recommends, for most liver problems or other health conditions, 75 to 100 mg per 10 lbs. of body weight per day. But consult a veterinarian to find out the proper dosage for your dog.

K-9 Immunity

K-9 Immunity is designed to fight cancer in dogs. Made from immunomodulating compounds, the vitamins are designed specifically for dogs. Used on thousands of dogs with cancer, and even on some humans, K-9 Immunity is available over the counter without a prescription. Use as directed on the bottle, but keep in mind, this over-the-counter medication is not guaranteed to eradicate cancer in a dog that is treated with it.

Astragalus

Studies have shown this herb to be a fighter of viruses and an immune system booster. Available at select pet stores and most major herbal markets and health food stores, follow the directions provided for optimum results.
