Sugar & Weight Loss

According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reduction in the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with weight loss. According to the American Diabetes Association, sugary foods have an extremely high rating on the Glycemic Index (GI) and result in rapid increases to blood sugar levels followed by a crash. Individuals usually eat twice the amount of sugary foods and twice the amount of calories to avoid energy crashes.

Considerations

After an international conference in Paris hosted by Benjamin Delessert, health professionals concluded sugar cannot be blamed entirely for weight gain. Sugars, when consumed in small amounts, will not necessarily contribute to rapid weight gain and may help with weight loss.

Warnings

France Bellisle, a researcher for a French government agricultural institution, attended this Paris conference and stated that sweet foods may result in a behavioral disorder. After consuming sweet foods, individuals often have a craving to consume more sweet foods. This is due partially in part to the energy crash that would result from not consuming more sweets.

Benefits

Researches from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, conducted a study with 69 overweight women over 12 weeks. The women were then separated into four groups, each of which had a different diet. The first group received no diet advice, the second received dietary advice alone, the third group received physical activity advice alone, and the fourth received dietary and physical activity advice.

The fourth group was told to consume a diet that required 10 percent of energy being derived from sugar. After 12 weeks, Group 4 lost the most weight and scientists concluded low sugar intake had something to do with it. It seems that sugar intake in low amounts can help with weight loss by speeding the metabolism. Queen Margaret University has received funding for projects similar to this one from the British Sugar Industry.

Fructose

Fructose is a sugar and carbohydrate that is found in many of processed foods that we eat. Fructose gets its sweet taste from an ingredient known as high-fructose corn syrup that's added during the preparation process. Our bodies have limited storage space for fructose, so if you consume too much then it will get converted to triglycerides that result in weight gain. The major difference between fructose and glucose is that fructose does not enter the bloodstream.

Glucose

Glucose is the simplest form of carbohydrate found in the body. Any carbohydrate besides fructose will ultimately be broken down into glucose. Candy bars and sugary snacks contain high amounts of glucose. This glucose has an immediate impact on blood sugar levels and results in an energy spike. Consuming excessive amounts of foods high in glucose will make weight loss difficult. In conclusion, sugar consumed in extremely small amounts can help increase the metabolism and help with weight loss, but if you consume too much, you'll gain weight rapidly.
