Procedures for Setting Up an Adult Daycare Facility

Procedures for Setting Up an Adult Daycare Facility

More middle-aged Americans face the issue of what to do with their elderly parents. While you must weigh many factors when thinking about opening an adult day-care facility, one question is not "is there a need?" A nationwide survey of adult day centers in 2007 stated more than 3,400 centers operated in the United States, providing care each day for 150,000 recipients. These centers meet only about half of the need.

Basics

Determine the need in your area. Is there a need for elderly care? Should you combine care for mentally handicapped adults as well? Visit existing facilities, noting activities and population characteristics to help you get a feel for your area's demands. Visit the Census Bureau website (link in Resources) to learn age demographics for your zip code.

Check with your state about licensing requirements and availability. Many states require passing an exam, completing a lengthy application and employing staff meeting requirements for a registered nurse or certified nurse's aide). The hours required by licensed staff the numbers vary from state to state.

Your daycare building will need to pass an inspection.

Look into insurance for your business. The minimum you'll need is liability protection. For a list of accredited insurance carriers, check with your state licensing board.

Details

Set your pricing structure. To determine your rate, see what other centers and facilities charge in your area. Rates for service will depend also on your location.

Consider the cost to provide entertainment for your adult clients. You will need a wide variety of games, art, music and movies. Family members will be more at ease leaving their loved ones in care knowing you have scheduled a variety of things to engage them. Will you provide outside services, such as hair styling on certain days, informational workshops or field trips?

Determine what meals and snacks you will provide and hours of operation.

Staff

State guidelines will influence much of your choice. But all states require a background check of everyone who has contact with clients. Some require all are certified health-care workers. Also, most require a 4:1 ratio of clients to workers.
