Parents' Responsibilities in Educating Youths

Parents' Responsibilities in Educating Youths

If a child is to be well educated, he should have involved parents. Parents play key roles in educating youths, having a greater influence than any single teacher or school system. A parent's responsibility for educating a child begins the day the child is born. Even simple things, like diet and playing with a child, can have a huge effect on how much the child will be able to learn later in life.

Legal Responsibilities

Many countries require parents to ensure that their children attend school for a certain period of time. These are often called truancy laws. In the United States, for example, the amount of time that parents must ensure their children attend school varies by state. Many states also provide constitutional exceptions to those rules for home schooling, but parents are still required to ensure that their children receive an education.

Homework Responsibilities

When it comes to homework, parents have two responsibilities. The first is to make sure that their children do their homework. This includes providing them a space to work and an environment that is conducive to studying. They need to turn off the television and limit music to that which helps their child to study. They need to find out whether the child has homework and follow through every night to make sure it is done.

The second major responsibility regarding homework is for the parents to NOT do the homework for the child. They need to be available to answer questions, provide guidance and encourage the child to achieve high standards, but they should not do the homework themselves. This is true whether it is a math worksheet or a diorama project. There are times when a parent can participate in the homework, but the child must do the actual work.

School Involvement

Parents need to be involved in the education of their children, even when someone else is providing the day-to-day teaching. Parents can meet with teachers at the beginning of the school year, attend all parent-teacher conferences and make themselves available whenever necessary to help out in the classroom or to talk about their child's progress. This enables them to be partners with the teacher in the child's education, and ensure that the child is able to achieve her potential.

Supplemental Learning

A trip to the grocery store gives a parent a chance to teach colors, reading and math.

A child's education is not limited to what is learned in school. School provides only the bare minimum that every child needs. The bulk of educational responsibility lies on parental shoulders. Parents need to engage their children in learning activities every day from the time the child is an infant until he leaves home.

This does not translate into providing a child with worksheets. It does, though, mean providing a stimulating environment rich in learning activities. It means reading to a child every day, modeling learning activities such as writing and math and taking the child to places like grocery stores, museums, parks and sporting events. Parents can turn everyday experiences into teachable moments. They can talk about current events while watching the news, play board games together or make scientific observations while looking at the stars or taking a walk in the park.
