Hypoglycemia is a condition in which blood glucose, or blood sugar, drops below normal levels. Because one of the main sources of food that is made into blood glucose is carbohydrates, people with hypoglycemia have several additional things to consider when beginning a low-carbohydrate diet.

Considerations

    Because the majority of the body's glucose is manufactured from carbohydrates, people who have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia should talk to their doctor before embarking on a low-carb diet. There may be ways in which traditional low-carb diets can be merged with hypoglycemic diets to give the advantages of both.

Small Meals & Good Carbs

    As you look at a low-carb diet, keep eating the multiple small meals of the hypoglycemic diet. Breakfast is especially important, as it sets the stage in the body for the production of glucose. Multiple smaller meals work best for maintaining blood sugar levels. It is important to eat enough at one meal to generate enough energy to make it to the next meal, but not to eat so much that your body is overwhelmed with blood sugar.

    One way to make a low-carb diet work with a hypoglycemic diet is to focus on healthy carbohydrates, like whole grains and those found in fruits and vegetables. By replacing refined carbs with healthier carbs, some of the benefits of a low-carb diet may be realized, while ensuring that blood sugar levels stay normal.

Controversy

    Another reason it is important to talk with your doctor before beginning a combined low-carb diet and hypoglycemic diet is that a number of medical professionals have suggested that hypoglycemia could be, in fact, caused by a lack of carbohydrates in the diet. If this is the case, going on a low-carb diet could be counterproductive for people with hypoglycemia.
