Knee Problems Due to Weight

One of the most common issues suffered by overweight people is knee pain and impairment. This includes those who are no more than 10 pounds over the average weight for their height. The knees are one of the most easily injured parts of the human body, with excess weight heightening the risk of problems. Overweight people with knee issues face increased risks of complications if surgery must be performed and generally have a tougher time recuperating from knee injuries than those of normal weight.

Types

Problems that are mechanical in nature and those that are classified as inflammatory make up the two basic types of knee conditions. Mechanical issues can come from excess wear on the knee or from a single injury. Overweight individuals are more likely than others to suffer more wear to the knees. Also, when heavy people suffer an injury it is likely to be more severe than a similar injury suffered by someone of normal weight. Among the possible injuries to be sustained are those that affect the ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Those whose knees deteriorate over time often suffer arthritis of the knees.

Causes

Physicians believe the extra pressure put on the knees by an excessive amount of weight causes overweight persons to have more knee problems than others. In addition to the added pressure, some doctors theorize that circulation problems (often experienced by heavy individuals) reduce the blood supply being sent to the cartilage in the knees. The lack of a good blood supply contributes to tears in the cartilage.

Treatment

Treatment for knee problems can involve first aid such as the RICE method (rest, ice, compress and elevation) but can be as complicated as surgery. Medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed to treat arthritic conditions of the knee. Some common surgeries repair tears in ligaments or tendons. Special precautions, especially with anesthesia, are often taken when surgery is performed on a heavy or obese person.

Prevention/Solution

One obvious prescription for preventing knee problems is the maintenance of a healthy frame portioned weight. Losing weight, of course, can be extremely beneficial for heavy individuals who are already experiencing knee issues as well. Aside from eating a balanced diet of appropriate portions, these persons are often encouraged to start an exercise program to speed weight loss and to participate in exercises specifically designed to strengthen the knees and surrounding areas.

Warning

Overweight people should be careful while recuperating from knee injuries to keep from putting too much pressure on their knees. They need to follow their physician's or physical therapist's recommendations completely. Trying to walk unassisted too soon can result in delayed healing as well as possible further damage. The most beneficial and least risky exercise endeavors for those with knee issues are swimming and the use of elliptical machines or stationary bikes. Someone with a knee problem should also consult a physician prior to starting any exercise program.
