How to Wash a Goat

Grooming your goat is essential whether you rear it as a farm animal for its milk or meat, to sell or to show. You can spot an unhealthy goat by looking at its coat which tends to be dull and parasite-ridden. Keep your goat healthy by exercising it, feeding it a balanced diet and giving it a regular washing. Proper washing will remove dirt and give your goat a clean, lustrous coat, as well as prevent parasites such as ticks and fleas.

Bathe your goat on a warm, sunny day to prevent it from catching a chill. Use a rope to tie it to a tree or fence, or take the help of another person to hold your goat. This will prevent it from attempting to escape while you bathe it.

Brush its coat thoroughly with a scrub brush to dislodge dirt and matted hair. Pay special attention to the area around the face, belly and back. This will enable you to easily remove dirt from its coat while washing.

Fill a bucket with warm water and mix it with half a capful of shampoo formulated for goats. You can also use a mild shampoo that will not deplete the natural oils from your goat's coat. Use a jug to pour water from the bucket all over your goat's body.

Gently rub your goat's body with a washcloth, scrubbing visibly dirty areas to remove the dirt. Discard the remaining shampoo solution from the bucket and rinse it. Fill the bucket with warm water and pour it over your goat's body to clean out dirt and soap. Work your fingers through the goat's coat to wash it thoroughly and remove all traces of dirt and soap.

Squeeze out excess water from your goat's coat with your hands. Wipe its body all over with a clean towel. You can dry your goat's body naturally by letting it bask in the sun, or you can use a blow-dryer.
