How to Start a Fruit Diet

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, registered dietitians, and nutritionists everywhere recommend that fruits and vegetables comprise a significant portion of your daily diet. The people with the longest lifespan on Earth, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, eat more than half of their daily intake of calories from fruits and vegetables. Nearly every vitamin and mineral that your body needs can be found in fruits and vegetables, and they are among the most nutrient-dense sources of food per calorie. Starting a fruit diet is a good way to alter your eating habits, stabilize your blood sugar and detox your body.

Starting a Fruit Diet

    1

Choose your fruits, with an eye toward variety, mixing fruits of different acidity for easiest digestion. Shoot for getting at least one serving from the five colors: red, yellow, green, white, and blue/purple. Get to know the nutritional content of fruits, so that you'll get a good balance of vitamins and minerals.

    2

Remember that many of the foods that you might consider veggies are actually fruits. If it contains seeds, it's a fruit. Pick up tomatoes, peppers, avocados, squash, olives and beans, and spread the nutrient wealth.

    3

For best flavor, select fruit that is ripe, fresh and in season. Since fruit is going to be your staple, find the best-tasting fruit you can.

    4

Eat fruit raw as often as possible, in order to get the maximum fiber and nutrients from your food. Fruit juices are okay, but should not comprise the bulk of your diet. Cut your fruit up into serving-sized pieces in advance, so that meals are simple and convenient.

    5

Take a tablespoon or two of flaxseed oil per day, along with supplements of Vitamins D and E. These vitamins are fat-soluble, so consume them along with flaxseed oil or a fatty fruit like avocado. Flaxseed oil will provide you with the beneficial omega acids that your body needs.

    6

Eat when you're hungry, even if it means eating six or more times a day. It doesn't have to be a full meal every time. The goal is a serving or two of fruit to keep the edge off and your blood sugar level. If you're binging, then you're waiting too long to eat.

    7

Drink plenty of water to help your body handle the increase of fiber in your diet. Don't overdo it, as you're getting plenty of fluid from the fruit.
