How to Replace Monte Carlo CV Joints

How to Replace Monte Carlo CV Joints

The front drive axles in your Chevrolet Monte Carlo apply torque from the engine to the wheels through a pair of front drive axles. Each of the drive axles has an inner and outer CV joint (constant velocity joint). A clicking sound heard while turning a corner indicates that a joint is worn or damaged. The least expensive way to replace bad joints is to replace the whole axle. Individual joints are expensive and hard to find.

Instructions

    1

Lift the Monte Carlo with the floor jack, and support the weight of the vehicle with jack stands placed under the front subframe. Remove the wheel with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar and a 19 mm socket. Set the wheel and lug nuts out of the way.

    2

Remove the axle nut, using a 36 mm 1/2-inch drive socket and the breaker bar. You can use a pipe to lengthen the bar and gain added leverage. This is a one-time-use nut, and the new axle will come with a new one. Push the axle into the hub by striking it with a punch and hammer, with the punch placed in the small dimple machined into the end of the axle. Never hit the axle directly with a hammer, as it will damage the axle and ruin its core value. The auto parts store may refuse to give you the core deposit back when you return the old part.

    3

Disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower control arm by removing the cotter pin and nut and striking the spindle with a sharp blow to loosen the joint. Then pry the lower control arm down with the pry bar, and slip the ball joint out of the spindle by pulling forward on the hub assembly. Push the axle out of the hub, and lower the hub assemble back down.

    4

Remove the axle from the transmission with the pry bar. The inner joint is held in by an internal clip, and you remove it by positioning the pry bar between the transmission and the inner joint and prying it out with a quick motion. Sometimes you must drive out the inner joint with a hammer and a pry bar. Catch any spilled fluid in the drain pan.

    5

Install the new axle into the transmission, and turn it while pushing until you feel it engage the splines in the transmission. Then tap it into the transmission until is is all the way seated.

    6

Slip the axle shaft into the hub assembly, and push it through the hub. Insert the ball joint back into the lower control arm. Then tighten the lower ball joint nut and the axle nut to factory specifications. These specifications are found in your service manual (see Resource).

    7

Install the wheel, and lower the Monte Carlo to the ground. Test-drive to make sure everything is working properly.
