How to Raise Bullfrogs in a Classroom

How to Raise Bullfrogs in a Classroom

A classroom pet is not only fun for students, but an educational experience. An easy option is to raise tadpoles and watch them mature into bullfrogs. They take only a little care each day and will reward observant students with their metamorphosis. Watching tadpoles become bullfrogs takes patience, as they are slow to mature, but remind students that a slowly developing bullfrog is a strong bullfrog.

Instructions

    1

Collect tadpoles from a local pond on private property by using a dip net and bucket.

    2

Provide a large flat-surface container with 2-3 inches of water and a layer of small rocks on the bottom. Water must be de-chlorinated by leaving it out for five to seven days; chlorine is deadly to tadpoles. Place a partially submerged rock in the container to allow the mature bullfrogs to emerge from the water. Use aquatic plants to oxygenate the water. Provide a gallon of water per two tadpoles.

    3

Feed your tadpoles boiled lettuce. Chop up the boiled lettuce and freeze. Give the tadpoles a pinch of lettuce twice a day.

    4

Watch your tadpoles change. It may take as long as 14 months for bullfrog tadpoles to mature. Tadpoles first grow back legs, then front legs, then their tail begins to shrink. At this point, your tadpole will stop eating because its shrinking tail becomes a food source. The tadpole then changes from gill-breathing to lung-breathing.

    5

Start feeding your mature bullfrog live animals, such as crickets and earthworms.

    6

Release your bullfrog back to the same pond where you collected the tadpoles. If you are keeping your bullfrog, provide an environment with half dry land and half water. Ideally, one bullfrog needs a 100-gallon tank.
