How to Make a Cat-Shaped Cupcake Cake

Cupcake cakes are cakes that are made to look like different shapes using cupcakes. Once the shape is achieved, the cupcakes are frosted so that they look like one large cake, with the frosting obscuring the borders between the cupcakes. A cupcake cake is a useful option for beginning bakers who want to make a shaped cake because when you use a knife to shape a square or rectangular cake, you only get one chance to get it right. Use regular-sized cupcakes to create the body and head of your cat. Place the cupcakes onto your cake platter, creating a thin rectangle shape for the body and an oblong shape for the head. Move the cupcakes around until you are happy with the shape. The number of cupcakes you need will depend on the size of your cat cake. Place a dab of frosting underneath each cupcake to hold it in place on the cake platter. That way, the cupcakes will not slide out of place when you frost them.

Place two lines of miniature cupcakes coming down from the body to create the cat's legs.

Add a curving line of miniature cupcakes off the back of the body to make the cat's tail.

Add two miniature cupcakes at the top of the cat's head to create its ears.

Frost the cupcakes using the frosting spatula. Select the frosting color of your choice. Smooth the frosting over all of the cupcakes, so that from the top, they look like one large cake. Use frosting to fill in the gaps between all of the cupcakes. When you reach the ear section, use the frosting to create points at the tops of the cupcakes to make those miniature cupcakes look more like a real cat's ears.

Use round chocolate candies to create the cat's eyes and nose.

Place frosting inside a pastry bag to pipe on the cat's mouth.

Add licorice ropes to the cat's face to create its whiskers.
