How to Lose Weight Without Having Baggy Skin

Gaining or losing large amounts of weight quickly can sometimes leave your skin without adequate time to adjust to your body's change in size. Like a basketball that has lost its air, the skin on a person who has dropped a lot of weight can become loose and baggy. Still, there are a number of steps that a person can take to avoid gaining loose skin while losing weight.

Instructions

Losing the Weight

    1

Before you begin losing weight, consider consulting both a personal trainer and a dietitian to help you work out the details of your weight-loss plan. Physique and diet differ from person to person, and it can be helpful to consult an expert to help customize your plan to your own body and your own goals.

    2

Exercise. To take up some of the slack in your skin as you shed the flab, use a combination of cardiovascular workouts to burn fat and weightlifting to help you build muscle. As the fat disappears, muscle will develop to take its place, keeping the skin filled out.

    3

Keep eating. In order to build muscle when exercising, you must consume a large number of calories. If your body doesn't have enough, it will continue to eat away at your existing fat and muscle, leading to baggier skin.

    4

Eat nutrient-rich foods. Look for foods that are high in lean protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids but low in sugar, saturated fat, and additives. That will improve both your skin and your weight. According to DietingStop.com, foods high in these "good" fatty acids include avocados, olives, oily fish, nuts, seeds, and cold-pressed oils.

    5

Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. The old "eight glasses of water a day" rule will not only help your skin but also will help flush your system of toxins.

    6

Lose the weight slowly, so your skin will have more time to adjust to the changes in your body's shape. According to Columbia University's health services department, skin becomes less elastic the longer it has held its current shape. So, if you've been overweight for a long time and lose weight quickly, the skin will be less willing to spring back into shape immediately. However, if you lose weight gradually and the change in shape occurs more slowly, the skin will have more time to regain some of that lost elasticity, allowing it to better cling to your body.

    7

Keep your skin healthy and hydrated by moisturizing it. Several companies make skin-toning creams, a list of which is available in the Resources section. Remember: when applying cream, always rub upwards on the skin, never downwards, as that will stretch it.
