How to Lose Weight in the Hips and Thighs

For years exercise gadgets have been marketed through TV infomercials, promising to slim your hips and abs. Serious fitness experts tend to scoff at such "irresponsible" marketing, as reducing target areas has long been regarded as physically impossible through exercise only. Recently, this has been challenged primarily by Charles Poliquin, who has developed a scientific approach to achieve spot fat reduction and minimize fat storage through exercise and diet. Exercise in general is a terrific way to tone up the hip and thigh areas.

    Do cardio workouts if you are not already. Great cardio for individuals who wish to achieve the slimmest hips and thighs possible is running long distance. Do not engage in sprints, as this activity tends to bulk up the thighs. Avoid spinning; according to Charles Poliquin, "spinning will increase the storage of intramuscular and subcutaneous fat in the hip and thigh areas to provide a more readily available source of fuel for the muscles."

    Do lots of lunges and squats. It's good for you to weight train your entire body to burn fat and tone. Do 15 reps per exercise. Keep in mind, however, that if you build muscle easily--this is entirely genetic--you may want to use lower resistance and higher reps (20) for your lower body. Otherwise, you may end up looking bulky. For best results, you should watch your diet when you work out. If not, you may end up with a fat layer on top of your toned thigh and hip muscles. And then you will definitely not have a slim lower body.

    Make changes to your diet. According to Charles Poliquin, you should eat vegetables such as broccoli to minimize the fat on your glutes. For your hips, stabilize your blood sugar levels by eating many small meals as well as less starchy carbs.

    Supplement your diet. Poliquin recommends that you take corosolic acid, R-form stabilized alpha lipoic acid and fish oils to control insulin, which leads to fat storage on the hips. To minimize fat on thighs, take indole-3-carbinol and phosphatidyl-choline. You can also just take a multi-vitamin designed for women.

    Do liposuction in the hip and thigh area if all else fails. It is expensive and dangerous to undergo this surgery, but it is quite effective.
