How to Lose Excess Skin After Weight Loss

A common problem that occurs with people who have lost a great deal of weigh is what to do about all that excess skin. Excess skin is a particular problem found on middle aged people who have lost weight quickly. There are a number of ways to deal with it, from losing more body fat to gaining more muscle to hydrating the skin sufficiently to encourage it to change its shape and adapt to your new body. An unfortunate fact, though, is that skin is sometimes "stuck" in a stretched-out shape, particularly if its owner is older and/or carried the extra weight for a long time.

Instructions

    1

Speak to a trainer about a weight lifting program. If you can bulk up the muscles underneath the skin, you can fill it out while still looking fit and healthy.

    2

Reduce your body fat. Skin is organic and adjusts to the body underneath it. Often, loose skin will actually be covering loose body fat rather than simply being loose. So, even if you've lost several pounds of fat, you may need to lose more to eliminate your loose skin.

    3

Hydrate your skin by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and moisturizing. Skin responds well to hydration and adapts best when it is well-watered.

    4

Slow down your weight loss. Loose skin can come from rapid weight loss, as your skin does not have time to adapt. You should be losing 3 pounds a week, at most, in order to prevent more loose skin from appearing.
