How to Look for Employment

If you are seeking employment, you know that you need to be determined, tenacious and consistent. Even if the news headlines shout about job shortages, the truth is that you can still find decent work if you know the right things to do and the best places to go. There are various options open to you in your search for a job and, if you utilize them, you will eventually succeed in getting employment.

Instructions

    1

Visit online jobs sites. There are several websites, such as Monster.com and Jobs.com, that list current jobs available throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as internationally. Most of these sites allow you to post your resume at no cost, so that potential employers can read over your information. If you need help, try using a special service that will create a presentable, professional-looking cover letter and resume. Jobs sites also offer sound career advice that will show you what you need to do in order to be a more viable candidate for employment. There are usually a number of job fields with openings, such as in accounting, entry level jobs, management and executive positions, education, technology, sales positions and more. The advantage in using an online jobs site is that it is available 24/7, so you can search for jobs at any time.

    2

Go to job fairs. Check your local newspaper often to find out when and where they are being held. If you decide to take this route, be aware that you have to come there, prepared to make a big impression. Employers or recruiters will be sizing up the way you look, how well you communicate and how enthusiastic you come across. When attending a job fair, present yourself in a professional, focused manner, so that you will stand out from the sea of individuals who come, unprepared and lackluster, to job fairs. Look and sound like you are serious about wanting to by hired by the companies you are interested in and it may give you an edge over other applicants.

    3

Try a reputable employment agency. It specializes in helping to put those looking for work together with companies or businesses who are looking to fill available positions. In many cases, the jobs may be only for temporary and for a designated period of time, but this may eventually lead to more permanent work. Make certain that you are current on the latest computer-related skills and that you have a flexible schedule, as both things can increase the chances of your being able to be placed in a position.

    4

Contact an employer or business directly. If you are interested in working for a specific company, go to their place of business and inquire whether there are any job openings. If the answer is "yes," then fill out the appropriate application. If there are no openings, then ask, in an assertive yet polite way, if you can leave your cover letter, resume and contact information, so that when work is available, you can be contacted. Make follow-up calls to find out if there are job openings and remind them that you left your information. Sometimes perseverance gets rewarded.

    5

Ask around. Don't neglect using your friends and acquaintances as resources to help find a job. Let them know that you are looking for work and ask them if they know of any job openings where they work or whether they have heard about any job availabilities in your area. The odds are that somebody will be able to give you some information and even recommend you to their employer.
