How to Improve Behavior in Children With Sensory Play Equipment

How to Improve Behavior in Children With Sensory Play Equipment

Children sometimes have problems with sensory processing. The main areas this may affect the child may be in the tactile area, in the vestibular or the proprioceptive. The tactile relates to touch, so a child may be oversensitive to anybody touching him, or even to the feel of his clothing against his skin. If the sensory disorder affects his vestibular system, he may have problems with balance. The proprioceptive relates to the muscles, joints and tendons, and may make the child seem clumsy, or uncoordinated. A sensory disorder in a child may be part of a larger disorder, such as autistic-spectrum disorder, or attention deficit disorder. Guided play with sensory toys can be one way of improving behavior and confidence.

Instructions

    1

Assess the children individually. Liaise with parents, carers and other professionals, particularly occupational therapists, (OTs). Occupational therapists learn about neurology and anatomy and orthopedics. According to Mandalachildrenshouse.com, a daily sensory diet actually leads to growth of the neuron cells, dendrites and synapses. Therefore, it is important that an OT is consulted in designing the classroom and instigating particular sensory stimulation activities.

    2

Balance sensory toys and sensory play with calmness. Some classrooms tend to be very bright with a decor that is too busy. This can lead to over-stimulation. Children can be distracted and this can interfere with concentration and learning. Integrate some play into normal classroom routine, for instance, a "shop" with some real goods and play money can be integrated into numeracy lessons.

    3

Encourage outdoor play using toys such as sand boxes, trampolines, and sit and spin toys. Active play such as this works off excessive energy. It can also be used as an incentive to work hard. Children often respond well if you tell them that a half-hour's hard work will be followed by a play period outside using the playground equipment.

    4

Use interactive floor displays and snooze areas to interest and relax children who have special needs or behavior problems, but do this following the guidance of the OT.
