Conducting a disintegrating eggshell experiment is easy and inexpensive. Students of all ages will be amazed to see vinegar turn eggs "naked" overnight. This project is also ideal for homeschool parents because no special scientific tools are needed and all the necessary supplies can be found in the kitchen. It is an excellent experiment to accompany lesson plans about chemical reactions between acetic acid and calcium carbonate.
Instructions
- 1
Set six eggs in the bowl so they are not touching each other.
2Pour enough vinegar in the bowl to submerge the eggs.
3Cover the bowl and refrigerate 24 hours.
4Remove the bowl from the refrigerator. Scoop the eggs out of the bowl with the spoon.
5Pour the vinegar out of the bowl. Replace the eggs and add fresh vinegar to submerge.
6Refrigerate the eggs for an additional 24 hours. Remove and extract the eggs. The shells will have disappeared, and the egg membranes will flex when you squeeze them.
