Fluids are sometimes measured in pounds, lbs, instead of liters. Pounds cannot be converted directly into liters without further information because one is a measurement of weight and the other is a measure of volume. However, if you know the specific gravity of the fluid as well as its weight, or mass, it is possible to convert from one measurement to the other. Two straightforward mathematical calculations are required to complete the conversion.
Instructions
- 1
Establish the specific gravity of the fluid being converted. Pure water has a value of 1, vehicle gasoline is 0.737 and beer is 1.01.
2Convert the value in pounds to a value in kilograms. Liters are metric units; you need to know the mass as a metric unit too. One pound = 0.45359237 kg. Enter the number of pounds into the calculator and multiply it by 0.45359237.
3Divide the mass in kilograms by the specific gravity of the fluid. The answer is the volume of fluid in liters.
4Check for errors. Multiply your answer by the specific gravity of the fluid. The result should be the mass in kilograms. If it is not, there was an error in your calculations.
