How to Compare Medigap Policies

Medicare supplemental insurance plans, better known as Medigap policies, are designed to help Medicare consumers save money. However, if you don't do your homework before committing to a plan, you may end up spending more money than you need to.

Medigap Policies List

Each region will have a unique selection of Medigap policies. In order to compare Medigap policies to one another, you will need to have an up-to-date list of the Medigap policies available in your area. To get a list, you can contact either your state's health insurance assistance program or its department of insurance. Your state health insurance assistance program can also offer counseling and answer any questions you have about choosing a Medigap policy.

Medigap Plan Finder

The official Medicare website, Medicare.gov, offers a Medigap plan finder tool. After you enter some basic information about yourself, such as your location, age and health status, the tool can supply you with a list of companies selling Medigap policies in your area and the estimated costs for someone of your age and health status.

Direct Call to the Companies

Once you narrow your choices down, you should call each company directly. Important questions to ask include specific information about how the plan works, and how your costs may change over the years. There are three ways your premium may change: a no-age-rated premium will stay the same throughout your life; an issue-age-rated premium will increase due to inflation, but is always based on the age you were when you bought; and an attained-age-rated premium increases as you grow older.
