Low thyroid function, also called hypothyroidism, affects about five million Americans. The thyroid is the gland that produces hormones that regulate metabolism. Symptoms of low thyroid function include fatigue and weight gain, poor circulation, muscle cramps and sleep disorders. Hypothyroidism has also been linked with obesity. If you suspect you have a thyroid problem, it is important to visit your doctor and have a blood test to confirm the problem and what the causes may be. One of the reasons for this imbalance can be an iodine or tyrosine deficiency.

    Look for herbal alternatives that contain Commiphora mukul extract, also known as Guggul.     Avoid foods that are known to upset thyroid balance. These include soda and drinks containing caffeine, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, foods containing added sugar, processed foods and most fast foods. Regular aerobic exercise will boost your serotonin levels, which are often low in people with hypothyroidism. This will also help with appetite control and depression. Yoga can be helpful as it teaches you how to breath properly, which can be a problem for anyone who is overweight or unfit.
